Plastic, Shrink Wrap and Film Recycling Program

Campus Participants

Program Partners

Project Description

Waste plastic bags, film, and shrink wrap are collected on campus and ultimately transformed by industry partner Trex into durable, outdoor products.  This is an expansion of a pilot program in 2021, instituted in partnership with Mankato Zero Waste originally by Minnesota State Mankato staff member Anne Ludvik.

How does Minnesota State Mankato participate?

Plastic film, bags, and shrink wrap that arrives to campus on incoming packaging is not accepted for recycling by LJP, which collects general waste by contract with the University.  These materials are collected in four bins located across campus, provided by Trex and maintained by Campus participants.  Bi-weekly, the WRC and Minnesota State Mankato Environmental Committee collects this waste from the bins, weighs, and transfers the collection to the downtown HyVee location for transport, ultimately, to Trex facilities. What is the cost to Minnesota State Mankato?

At present, this service is provided by University staff and employees at no cost to the university.

What is the impact of this program?

The program is on-going through at least 2025 with the support of the WRC, but between January and October 2024, this program has removed nearly 100 pounds of plastic from the waste stream since Spring 2024 that is generated by the University. Note this is a small fraction of all plastic waste generated — as with all plastic recycling programs in Minnesota and the US generally, the vast amount  (>80%) of plastic waste is not recycled.
