Minnesota State Mankato to Recognize 100th Anniversary of 19th Amendment, Women’s Right to Vote
Events scheduled throughout October
Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato will be hosting a variety of events in October to highlight the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, and Minnesota becoming the 15th state to ratify the 19th Amendment.
The events, all free and open to the public, include:
- Sept. 30 – Oct. 23: A 12-panel traveling display, titled “A Century of Civic Engagement,” created by the League of Women Voters of Minnesota, will be showcased on the first floor of the University’s Memorial Library.
- Oct. 7 – 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Library Services will be hosting “A Century of Civic Engagement” reception for the traveling display. Minnesota State Mankato Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Marilyn Wells and Lynn Solo, president of the League of Women Voters of St. Peter, are scheduled to speak at the event.
- Oct. 10 – 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Library Services will host a presentation by author and Minnesota State Mankato faculty member Lori Ann Lahlum. The presentation is titled “Equality at the Ballot Box: Votes for Women on the Northern Great Plains.” Lahlum will share information from her new book by the same name. Also speaking at the event is Minnesota State Mankato faculty member Elizabeth Sandell, who will give an update on local League of Women Voters activities.
- Oct. 14 – Oct. 28: The Minnesota State Mankato Women’s Center will display in its Centennial Student Union office window, Room 218, a timeline of when various groups were granted the right to vote and who still remains disenfranchised.
- Oct. 28 – 3-4:30 p.m.: Lahlum will be honored with a book release program celebrating the publishing of her new book, “Equality at the Ballot Box: Votes for Women on the Northern Great Plains.” The event will be held in the Centennial Student Union, Room 245. Joining her on stage will be guest speaker Sarah Carter from the University of Alberta.
