2020-2021 Good Thunder Reading Series Features Seven Events
Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s 2020-2021 Good Thunder Reading Series will host 10 writers during seven events in the series’ 39th year.
The annual Good Thunder Reading Series invites new and professional writers to Mankato to come together with community readers and writers, be interviewed on public radio, conduct discussions on the craft of writing and read from their published works.
All of this year’s virtual events are on googlemeet and are free and open to the public. A registration link is available here.

Featured writers in the fall 2020 Good Thunder Reading Series include:
• Thursday, Sept. 24: Poet Ilya Kaminsky is this year’s annual Nadine B. Andreas Visiting Writer. Fiction writer Kayla Lutes, a master of fine arts candidate at Minnesota State University, Mankato, will read from her work.
• Thursday, Oct. 15: Essayist Erica Trabold
• Thursday, Nov. 12: Poet Leila Chatti
The spring 2021 series will feature:
• Tuesday-Friday, Jan. 26-29: Novelist Brit Bennett is this year’s annual Eddice B. Barber Visiting Writer Resident.
• Thursday, Feb. 25: Fiction writer Chris McCormick and poet Michael Torres
• Thursday, March 25: Fiction writer Ayse Papatya Bucak
• Thursday, April 22: Kao Kalia Yang is this year’s Robert C. Wright Minnesota Writer Resident. nonfiction and picture book writer. Tina Gross, a cataloging/metadata librarian, poet and activist originally from Minnesota, will read her work.
The Good Thunder Reading Series began in 1982 and has committed itself since to programs that balance emerging and established talent drawn from Minnesota, the Upper Midwest and the rest of the nation.
The Good Thunder Reading Series is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
The 2020-21 Good Thunder Reading Series receives support from the Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of English, the College of Arts and Humanities, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the Nadine B. Andreas Endowment, the Eddice B. Barber Visiting Writer Endowment, the Robert C. Wright Endowment, and individual donors. Additional assistance comes from the Emy Frentz Arts Guild and Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Minnesota State Mankato.
