Nov. 1: Music Performance Series Features Caravan du Nord

MANKATO, Minn. –The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Music's Performance Series will be featuring Caravan du Nord on Friday, Nov. 1 in the Earley Center for Performing Arts, 320 Maywood Ave.

Caravan du Nord is a traveling showcase of Minnesota music, bringing top regional acts, emerging bands and music industry professionals to towns across Greater Minnesota for a day of workshops, networking and performances. Sponsored by 89.3 The Current, this annual fall tour has presented more than 200 artists to audiences totaling more than 10,000. Caravan du Nord is an ongoing project of the Minnesota Music Coalition.

The lineup for the Mankato portion of the tour includes the following:

• 4 - 4:50 p.m. Katy Vernon Mental Health for Musicians Workshop (PA102)
• 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Music Industry Social Hour – open to the public (Weggy's on Campus)
• 7 - 7:30 p.m. Katy Vernon (Halling Recital Hall)
• 7:45 - 8:30 p.m. Maria and The Coins (Halling Recital Hall)
• 8:45 - 9:45 p.m. Reina del Cid (Halling Recital Hall)

Reina del Cid (pictured at left) is a singer songwriter and leader of the eponymous folk-rock band based in Minnesota. Her song-a-week video series, "Sunday Mornings with Reina del Cid," has amassed 30 million views on YouTube and collected a diverse following made up of everyone from jamheads to college students to white-haired intelligentsia. In 2011 she began collaborating with Toni Lindgren, who is the lead guitarist on all three of Del Cid’s albums, as well as a frequent and much beloved guest on the Sunday Morning videos.

In the past dozen or so years, Katy Vernon has established herself as one of the busiest musicians in Minnesota, combining melodic pop/folk songwriting with her twangy Americana band. Vernon has won numerous songwriting awards and was also a finalist in the New Song contest at Kerrville Folk Festival (Texas).

Maria and the Coins bundle big-picture pop ambition into earnest, indie sensibility. The five-some have distinguished themselves in the Minneapolis alt-rock scene by fusing singer-songwriter driven pop hooks with the vulnerability and honesty of an indie band.

The 2019 Caravan du Nord is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
