Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Performing Arts News Release

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato's Department of Performing Arts will feature the Cactus Blossoms in concert on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Hooligans, 1400 East Madison Avenue (Madison East Center), Mankato. The Lost Walleye Orchestra will also perform. Two Department of Performing Arts music majors, Emma Josephine and Sylvia Stephenson, will open the show at 7 p.m.

The concert is sponsored by the Minnesota State Mankato Performance Series.

Take your parents' country and folk, add some fresh-indie flavor, and you've got the Cactus Blossoms. Brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum are the singing/songwriting duo known as the Cactus Blossoms. For over 12 years now, the band has been crafting a nostalgic, yet modern take on country and folk, led by the consistent vocal harmonies from both brothers. The duo released "One Day," their third studio album, in 2022, and the LP's 11 tracks add even more steps in experimentation between their past influence and the current state of music.

"It feels good to be called for a gig anywhere right now, after canceling tour after tour over the last couple years," shared Burkum. "It's just exciting to be back at it. I don't know how these things always work out, but we have a new record out now, so it seems like a good time to go back with something new."

The Lost Walleye Orchestra members have been recognized for their outstanding performance. Billy Steiner was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame in 2002, and every Lost Walleye Orchestra member has been a finalist for a Minnesota Music Award in various individual and group categories.

Emma Josephine and Sylvia Stephenson are two music industry songwriting majors. Emma Josephine says, “I’m so excited to open for the Cactus Blossoms and connect with talented musicians. The show is an opportunity to take part in a dynamic performance and to share my original music."

Concert admission is $20 in advance, $25 day of show. Tickets are available at Hooligans (cash sales) or online at hss.mnsu.edu/music-events. Tickets are also available through the Performance Series office, 507-389-5549.
