Oct. 9: Minnesota State Mankato Hosting Geography Colloquium on Fall Fridays

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Geography is holding a fall 2020 Geography Colloquium that features events from 3-4:15 p.m. each Friday during the fall. The events are available online on Zoom and are open and free to all.

The geography colloquium, the longest-running speaker series at the University, began Sept. 18 and will run each Friday (except Nov. 27) through Dec. 4.

The next geography colloquium subject is “Malaria and Leishmaniasis: Geography Matters,” which will be presented Friday, Oct. 9 from 3-4:15 p.m. by Mary Ann McDowell, Jefferson Science Fellow of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. McDowell will present her work on two tropical diseases that affect global public health.

According to an event preview provided by Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Geography, infectious diseases vary by geographic region and population, and change over time. The geographical distribution of disease has changed dramatically over human history. For example, at the beginning of the last century, nearly all of the 200 countries in the world were endemic for malaria. Since that time, global malaria control efforts have resulted in over 100 countries eliminating malaria, with an additional 21 countries positioned to achieve elimination in the near future.
