Minnesota State Mankato’s International Student Enrollment Ranks 12th Nationally for 2nd Time in 3 Years
Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato has moved up two spots to a No. 12 national ranking in international student population among master’s institutions, according to an annual “Open Doors Report” recently released by the Institute of International Education.
The rankings, which reflect data from the 2019-20 academic year, list Minnesota State Mankato has having 1,554 international students over the course of that year. It’s the second time in three years Minnesota State Mankato has ranked 12th nationally. The University was 14th nationally in the 2019 rankings.
“Minnesota State Mankato is proud to again be among the national leaders in international student population,” said University President Richard Davenport. “We are committed to being a global university, evidenced by having students from nearly 100 countries. Eventually, we hope to have students from 150 countries.
“Global Education at Minnesota State Mankato plays a crucial role in not only the academic success of our international students, but in helping them acclimate culturally on campus and in the community.”
In the last nine Open Door reports (from 2012 to 2020), Minnesota State Mankato’s international student enrollment more than doubled in size, from 770 in the 2012 report to 1,554 in the 2020 report.

In the fall of 2020, Minnesota State Mankato has international students from 95 different nations, with the most students coming from Nepal, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. Minnesota State Mankato was ranked 38th among master’s institutions in the 2012 Open Doors international student rankings. Minnesota State Mankato then ranked 34th in 2013, 31st in 2014, 29th in 2015, tied for 23rd in 2016 and 16th in 2017, 12th in 2018 and 14th in 2019.
Minnesota State Mankato’s international student population in recent Open Doors reports were 1,583 in 2019; 1,614 in the 2018 report; 1,374 in the 2017 report; 1,281 in the 2016 report; 1,228 in the 2015 report; 1,044 in the 2014 report; 885 in the 2013 report; and 770 in the 2012 report. (Note: Figures used in each report are from the preceding fall. For example, the November 2020 report reflects fall 2019 enrollment data.)
Minnesota State Mankato’s international student population and their families have made a positive impact on the local economy, contributing $40.3 million that supported 206 jobs in the local economy, according to a 2019 NAFSA report available here:
