Sept. 19: Minnesota State Mankato Opens 2024-2025 Good Thunder Reading Series

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s 2024-2025 Good Thunder Reading Series will host seven writers this year, with fall semester events scheduled for Sept. 19 and Oct. 24 and spring semester events scheduled for Feb. 26, March 20 and April 17.

All of the events are free and open to the public.

This year’s Good Thunder Reading Series begins with a visit by author Kevin Brockmeier, this year’s Eddice B. Barber visiting writer, on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Sept. 19 schedule:

  • 10-11 a.m. – Workshop, Memorial Library, first floor, SW corner.
  • 3-4 p.m. – Craft Talk, Performing Arts Building, Room 203A. Books available for purchase.
  • 7:30-8:15 p.m. – Brockmeier will read from his work, Carnegie Art Center, 120 S. Broad St., Mankato. Books available for purchase.

About the featured writer (courtesy of the Good Thunder Reading series): Kevin Brockmeier is the author of the memoir, “A Few Seconds of Radiant Filmstrip”; the novels “The Illumination”; “The Brief History of the Dead”; and “The Truth About Celia”; the story collections “The Ghost Variations,” “Things That Fall from the Sky” and “The View from the Seventh Layer”; and the children’s novels “City of Names and Grooves: A Kind of Mystery.” His work has been translated into 17 languages. He teaches frequently at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and lives in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he was raised.

Founded in 1981, the Good Thunder Reading Series brings nationally and internationally acclaimed writers from diverse backgrounds and literary traditions to Mankato, Minnesota, with the goal of promoting access to great literature, inspiring creativity, and connections in our communities, and fostering lively conversations about how writers work and why writing matters.

The Good Thunder Reading Series is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

The 2024-25 Good Thunder Reading Series also receives support from Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of Creative Arts; College of Humanities and Social Sciences; Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; the Nadine B.
