MANKATO – The season continues next week at Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Theatre and Dance with the opening of Molière’s "Tartuffe."
First performed in 1664, "Tartuffe" is one of Moliere’s most famous comedies.
Tartuffe is a vagrant wanderer who Orgon takes into his home. Tartuffe impresses Orgon with his hypocritical devout religious moral beliefs and behavior. As a result of his carefully constructed persona, Tartuffe becomes adored by Orgon and his mother, Madame Pernelle. Orgon promises his daughter’s hand in marriage, even as Tartuffe attempts to seduce his wife Elmire.
According to director Vladimir Rovinsky, this adaptation from David Ball is a fluid modern adaptation of the text, and it includes some playful jabs at modern politics as well as an unexpected finale. The production takes place outside in a confusing garden labyrinth, and the set includes a working water fountain.
"Tartuffe" runs Feb. 17-19 and Feb. 24-26 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 & 27 at 2 p.m. in the Ted Paul Theatre at the Earley Center for Performing Arts, Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Tickets are $17 regular, $15 for seniors ages 65 and older, children under 16 and groups of 15 or more; and $12 for Minnesota State Mankato students. The Box Office is open 4-6 p.m. weekdays in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center, or buy single tickets online at MSUTheatre.com. The Box Office phone number is 507-389-6661.
