Visas & Travel
Understanding the requirements of your visa and important regulations around travel will help you stay in status and informed.
What is a Visa?
The visa stamp in your passport is permission to apply to enter the U.S. in that particular visa category. Your passport and I-20 or DS-2019 must remain valid while you are in the U.S., but you may remain in the U.S. with an expired F-1 or J-1 visa. The next time you travel abroad you must apply for a new F-1 or J-1 visa if you wish to return to the U.S. Visas can only be obtained outside of the U.S. at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. (Canadian citizens are not required to have a visa stamp to enter the U.S).
