Grade Smarter Not Harder: Hacking Student Assessment
Tuesday, January 5, 2021
1:45 PM - 2:15 PM
Zoom
This session will:
- Participants will introduce themselves in the chat: Name, department, what you hope to learn in this session.
- Knowledge/Comprehension Level: Using automated quizzes in D2L, team quizzing in Qualtrics, allowing for multiple attempts.
- Application/Analysis: Examples of case studies, writing assignments, and other possible activities. Discuss using rubrics and random grading to help make grading efficient.
- Synthesis/Evaluation: Examples of projects, writing assignments, and other possible activities. Discuss using alternative delivery approaches and innovative grading approaches that can help ease grading and give students tangible, useful feedback.
- Activity: Two-minute free-write to brainstorm ideas, 5 minutes to share.
- Review the issue of cheating, and how to address this in the classroom. The reality is, with many online classes there will be a lot more cheating, so think about low-stakes tests or activities that are harder to cheat on.
- Final note: This is an opportunity to help students see how their learning should not be bound by the classroom – we are in a unique position to make our teaching and assessment more nimble and relevant. Think about what skills you want your students to graduate with to be good employees and citizens.
