Solidifying Foundational Knowledge through Alternative Assessment Methods by Iron Range Engineering

Facilitated by Darcie Christensen and Elizabeth Pluskwik

Iron Range Engineering is an innovative program situated on the Minnesota North Mesabi Campus in Virginia, MN. The program is built upon three tenants of learning: design, professionalism, and technical. We are continually striving to help students solidify their foundational knowledge in individual courses but also between courses through learning and assessment methods. Students are assessed in a variety of ways in each of the three areas, but rarely are traditional, written exams administered to assess students. In this 3-session workshop, we will share our overall vision and purpose for focusing on foundational knowledge and using alternative assessment methods to increase student learning.  Participants will gain examples and ideas ready to use in a variety of courses. Multiple faculty from Iron Range Engineering will be involved each week to offer approaches, advice, and resources from a variety of topic areas. These methods are adaptive to both face-to-face and virtual environments while helping combat the typical difficulties in finding out what students know.

Date:  October 12th, 19th, and 26th at 11:00 am
