Program Highlights

  • You can complete the M.A. entirely online, and most classes are offered in an online, asynchronous format to accommodate any schedule. Only four classes require synchronous meetings, and these can be attended remotely.
  • The program can be completed in two years, or even less if students can take classes and/or engage in research during summers.
  • With a particular focus on the skills you will need to be an effective teacher at the community college level, the M.S. provides a solid foundation in the discipline of sociology through engaging coursework on social theories and inequalities.
  • Students in the program will have opportunities to collaborate with professors on ongoing research projects and to help lead and teach undergraduate sociology classes. In recent years, student in the program have co-authored peer-reviewed manuscripts or co-presented at professional conferences with professors, and many often guest lecture in their classes.
  • Even beyond teaching, graduates of the program are well-equipped for doctoral study in sociology or related disciplines, and they compete for many in-demand jobs like data scientist or research analyst – jobs that the US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimate will grow between 20% and 35% over the next decade.
