Identity Work In Women’s Reentry Experiences: A Transformative Classroom Behind The Fence

Dr. Vicki Hunter and Laura Harrison will co-teach this innovative course that will study the reentry experiences of women using sociological and feminist theories of identity. The class roster will include students living within the women’s prison in Waseca and students from Minnesota State University. This unique educational experience will provide an opportunity for both groups of students to learn about how sociological and feminist theories of gender, race, and class apply to the process of reentry. The course will take place in an environment that exposes students to diverse perspectives on incarceration, reentry, and identity.
DETAILS:
- Class will meet Thursday evenings at the women’s prison in Waseca. To be eligible for the course, students must be available on Thursday evenings from 4:30 PM to 8:30PM
- Books needed for the course will be loaned to students at no charge
- Transportation from Minnesota State Mankato to Waseca will be provided
- There is an administrative fee of $135 for this course (but no books to purchase)
- Interested students should sign up for an interview by April 15 to learn more about the class and to gain permission to register; interviews will be done over the phone or Zoom
