Gig Economy
The economy is always changing, and ‘gig’ jobs are growing exponentially. Gig work, freelancing, or side hustles are ways that workers are finding ways to make money and gain experience.
What is a gig? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a gig is a single project or task for which a worker is hired, often through digital marketplace, to work on demand. Some gigs are short-term; however, some workers pursue gigs as a self-employment opportunity.
Common Industries in the Gig Economy
- Arts and Design: musicians, graphic designers, crafts and fine arts, and customized projects
- Computer and Information Technology: web developers, software designers, and computer programmers
- Construction and Extraction: carpenters, painters, and other construction workers
- Media and Communications: technical writers, interpreters, translators, photographers, content creators, social media influencer
- Transportation and Materials Moving: ridesharing apps (Lyft, Uber, DoorDash, etc.)
- Business: marketing, consulting, financial management
