Documentary "MLK 11.12.61" Viewing Event and Panel Discussion - Virtual
Video SNEAK PEAK posted Nov. 12, 2021, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s visit to Mankato.
On Nov. 12, 1961, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to Mankato. While here, he gave two sermons at Centenary Methodist Church and a speech at Mankato High School (now Mankato West High School).
To explore this history, the Kessel Peace Institute of Minnesota State Mankato and True Façade pictures collaborated to make a 40-minute documentary.
Join us on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2022, for the online premiere of our documentary film. The film explores the history, context, and legacy of Dr. King’s visit to Mankato and reflects on where we have been as a community, and where we need to be heading. A panel discussion featuring individuals from the documentary will follow.
The project received support from the following Minnesota State Mankato colleges and departments: the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Education, Institutional Diversity, African American Affairs, the Memorial Library, the Department of Communication Studies, and the Department of History, as well as the Greater Mankato Diversity Council.
