About the Counseling Center

The Counseling Center provides a range of help and services, from individual and group counseling to referrals. Services are free, comfortable, and confidential; the Counseling Center is here to help students navigate any difficulties going on personally, socially, or in school. It doesn’t have to be crisis - no problem is too small, if it’s in the way come to the Center and explore the services we have to offer you.

 

Mission

The mission of the Counseling Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato is to provide support to students in addressing personal, social, educational, and mental health concerns. Our aim is to increase student success and retention in the university within a welcoming environment that appreciates diversity and pursues social justice.

The Counseling Center offers a variety of short-term, wellness-oriented services to address a broad range of needs. Our goal is to help students improve coping and develop skills to achieve personal wellness and academic success. The Counseling Center aims to provide a safe, affirming environment where students can connect to resources that will help improve overall well-being.

 

Staff

Clinical staff at the Counseling Center consists of six full-time psychologists with a variety of theoretical orientations who have specialized in university mental health. Additionally, under supervision, both doctoral and master’s interns provide services to students. The counseling staff are experienced in responding to a variety of personal and social issues typically encountered by university students.

Confidentiality

A feeling of trust and safety is critical for persons to grow and learn about themselves. Visits to the Counseling Center are private, and no one outside the center is given any information without a student's written permission. No information becomes a part of a student's academic record. There are required legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality should the life and safety of the student or someone else be in imminent danger.

 

Accreditation

The Minnesota State Mankato Counseling Center is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS), one of only two IACS-accredited centers in Minnesota and one of less than 200 accredited in the nation.
