Education: I graduated from GBSC in Cincinnati, OH in 2017 with a BA in Integrative Studies of Intercultural Study and Youth Counseling. Currently, I am working on my Master of Science in Professional School Counseling.
What I Like About Being an SSC: I think my favorite part of the job is being able to assume a unique position and opportunity to connect with residents, Desk Assistants, students, and other ResLife staff! This position will allow one to have a perfect blend of professional environment and personal growth as you are exposed to our supportive community within the residence halls.
Favorite SSC Memory/Experience: Among many, I have to say that my one-on-one conversations with Desk Assistants and Community Advisors have been the joyous experience of the job! I have had plenty of memorable conversations shared over cups of coffee with these wonderful people!
Professional Development: Although this is not my first supervisory position in my career, being an SSC for Julia Sears has helped me to grow distinctly, especially in my interpersonal skills. I think the ability to adapt to various communication styles for different audiences is crucial in this position since you work with a wide range of personalities daily!
Position Balance and Academics: My first year being an SSC was a learning experience for me when it comes to setting a well-balanced routine. Although SSCs are “only” capped at 20 hours per week in the SSC position, when I factored my own class hours, teaching hours, and other commitments into my schedule, things could be chaotic instantly! A quick tip from me: be sure to surround yourself with a good system that works for you and good people who are there to help you, especially to remind you that you are a student, first and foremost.
My Professional Dream: At the core, my passion lies in teaching and counseling. I have witnessed some teachers and counselors who truly had an impactful influence on others. I would not be here if it weren’t for some of those wonderful people. Wherever I will be, I will count myself blessed if I could follow in their footsteps!
