What I Like About Being a SLA
I love being able to connect with students and see their professional and leadership skills develop over the course of a semester. It is great to be able to provide support and guidance while working with them to make innovative ideas and brilliant events come to life.
Favorite SLA Memory/Experience
My favourite experience was running the leadership kickoff at the start of the fall semester. It was great to see over 150 students come together to focus on their leadership development and set goals for themselves as campus leaders.
Professional Development
This position has allowed me to experience advising a team as well as managing several important responsibilities simultaneously. Key skills I am developing through this role are communication between my advisees and the professional staff in Residential life, financial management of the budget that I oversee, and how to be a supportive advisor!
Position Balance and Academics
My ability to balance my position with my academic fluctuates over the semester, but I always make sure that I have a clear schedule and a To-Do list in order of priority to ensure I keep on top of everything. During calm periods I try to get ahead on work to make the busy periods easier and then during busy periods I know I can lean on my colleagues to help out where needed. I always make sure I have time to sleep though - that is one thing I never neglect.
My Professional Dream
My dream profession is to be an organizational development consultant, to work with global CEO's on developing their leadership skills and how they can improve their organisation's Corporate Social Responsibility.
